Not too long ago, the Mammoth Creameries team ventured out to California to showcase our ice cream at Natural Products Expo West. We’re a Texas brand, but so many people at this event—especially Californians—would ask if our company name held any connection to Mammoth Mountain. It was this reoccurring question that inspired us to share this explanation behind our namesake.

The last great Ice Age peaked over 25,000 years ago, and it was at this particular time that Woolly Mammoths roamed the area that we presently know as Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. As one of the most massive land mammals to roam the land—weighing in at up to 6 tons—the word ‘mammoth’ would eventually become synonymous with descriptors meaning massive, enormous, gigantic.

It may come as a surprise that the name was the last thing we came up with. We had perfected the recipe of our keto ice cream, shared the product with all of our friends, and decided that we wanted to start a legitimate business that would allow us to spread this creation to the masses. So, we started brainstorming.

We knew we wanted something short, but symbolic, so we gravitated toward animals that could be representative of keto ice cream. Not the most obvious connection, but we felt like we were making headway.

Narrowing it down to animals that lived in cold climates seemed like a logical next step. We couldn’t go with Polar Bears, or anything similar, because of Klondike. Reindeer were too Chrsitmas-y. Penguins didn’t have the presence we wanted our brand to have. And then BOOM: it hit us: A Woolly Mammoth. It was large and in charge, like we want to be in this industry. Upon further research, we learned that under their furry exterior was a layer of almost four-inches of fat; seemed like the perfect parallel for a brand that wants to educate consumers on the plentiful benefits of high fat ice cream.

We’re proud to have the majestic Mammoth grace our pints and hope to leave a legacy as great as the animal itself.
