keto diet graph

Starting a new diet and lifestyle is jumping into a world of unique foods, planning, body, and mental reactions, and ultimately, achieving new goals. While everybody is different, we’ve listed some expectations vs. realities of the keto diet so you can focus more on your goals and less on the surprises that come along the way!

Expectation: Kissing Comfort Foods Goodbye

Reality: Keto Comfort Still Exists

When people think of the word “diet,” they often think of restrictions, calorie counting, and lots of salads. Fortunately for those shifting to keto, comfort foods still exist. While the keto diet may restrict carbs, there are keto alternatives for any and every meal you can think of. From keto bread, pizza crust, cereals, granola, ice cream, sweetener, chili, brownies, chocolate, bagels, pasta (we think you might get the point), there’s a keto option for all of those must-have sweets, treats, and carb-filled snacks that you’ll likely crave along the way.

Expectation: Eating All The Bacon and Butter in the World

Reality: You Still Need Your Greens

While we may have gotten your hopes up regarding keto comfort foods, that doesn’t mean that you should binge on bacon and butter 24/7. Keto is a great way to lose or maintain weight, help with health issues such as type 1 diabetes or heart disease, and live an overall healthier lifestyle that avoids sugar and carbs. Also, once you achieve ketosis, you’ll feel a surge of energy and mental clarity like you’ve never felt before. But it’s important to track what types of fat you’re consuming regularly, and to avoid too much saturated fat. Greens, healthy fats from avocados and nuts, low-sugar fruits, and protein from eggs, fish, and meat are essential on a keto diet. Lastly, not all butter is created equal. Choose 100% grass fed for a healthier option, like the kind we use in our keto ice cream.

Expectation: Entering Ketosis Right Away

Reality: Patience, Young Grasshopper

When your body officially switches from using sugar to fat as its primary energy source, you enter the metabolic state called ketosis. Achieving ketosis typically takes people between 1-10 days, but that doesn’t ring true for everyone. Factors such as physical activity, metabolism, age, and carb, protein, and fat intake will also determine the length it takes to reach ketosis.

Expectation: You Can Wing a Keto Diet

Reality: Pull Out Those Planners

Don’t let this scare you - planning is not necessarily a bad thing. While keto does require some thought, we can promise you; it’s not rocket science. Simple steps such as picking one day a week to meal plan, or stocking up on keto snacks, so you always have a backup, will keep you from slipping up and falling into old, sugary habits.

We hope you were able to get a better sense of keto-living with our expectations vs. reality list. Sticking to a keto lifestyle is super achievable, has incredible health benefits, and can be fun (we’re a lively community, we promise)!
