If you’re a part of the keto fam, you’ll be happy to know it’s National Dairy Month! While we can probably guess that you incorporate dairy into many (or all) of your meals, it’s still nice that our favorite, creamy, fatty, delicious dairy gets its very own month of recognition.

The saying “dairy is scary” has been thrown around for quite some time, and the truth is, SOME dairy is scary.  That’s why we’re committed to using carefully sourced grass-fed and high-quality dairy products in our keto ice cream so you can rest knowing that you’re eating clean and not contributing to unsustainable and poor dairy farming practices.

Why is it important for cows to be grass-fed?

Grass-fed cows are allowed to roam freely and graze on grassy pastures, which is naturally the best food source for them. Cows that are not grass-fed eat commercial feed that often consists of soy and corn (full of GMOs), grains, and other high starches, antibiotics, and byproducts of vegetable oils. We know what you’re thinking…gross. We think so too.

What a cow eats is important, because that’s ultimately what goes into your body. Cows that are grain-fed, instead of grass-fed, often become malnourished, causing your dairy products to have less nutritional value.

Health Benefits of Grass-fed Butter

Grass-fed butter contains healthy saturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids. Saturated fats have been proven to help with weight loss. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for your body and are a major component of your cell membranes — they can even help create hormones to prevent blood clots. Major win!

In addition, grass-fed butter is rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is a fatty acid linked to fighting cancer, preventing bone loss, helping your body build muscle, and protecting your body from chronic inflammatory diseases.

While an old-school cardiologist may not be on-board with butter, the truth is, grass-fed butter supports heart health on a low-carb diet. Grass-fed butter is rich in antioxidants, saturated fats, and contains several nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E, K2, lecithin, selenium, and iodine — big words with big heart-health benefits!

Organic vs. Grass-Fed Butter

It’s important to note that just because a butter label says it’s organic, does not mean that the cows are grass-fed. Organic butter is pesticide-free, but those dairy cows can still have grains, corn, and other starches in their diet. Only a “grass-fed” marked label will guarantee the nutrient-dense, clean butter we’ve all grown to love.

We’re All About Heavy Cream

We can’t give grass-fed butter all the credit. Heavy cream, such as the cream found in a pint of Mammoth Creameries frozen custard, is rich in healthy fats that keep blood sugar stable and provide more energy and brainpower. Not to mention, it tastes delicious!

Heavy cream is great for people on a keto diet because it adds extra saturated fats to meals and beverages. Just like grass-fed butter, heavy cream contains several vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial to your health. Vitamin A, for example, is essential for eye health and immune function, and phosphorus and calcium are two minerals that help build strong AF bones.

Only the Best Ingredients

The quality of your food should be the first priority when it comes to choosing what to eat. Many products that claim to be low in fat or sugar are filled with artificial sweeteners, oils, and other junk ingredients. With Mammoth Creameries keto ice cream, you never have to worry about fake ingredients that you can’t pronounce. In fact, our frozen custard is made with just a handful of ingredients including cream, xylitol (a natural sugar substitute with a low glycemic index), cage-free egg yolks, and grass-fed butter. Our top-quality sweet cream base has a spectacular taste and spectacular health benefits. Name a better combo, we dare you!

Next time you hear someone put down dairy, remember that quality is key. You are what you eat, and in this case, we want to be blades of fresh green grass.
